Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson is facing calls to drop leading man Paul Mullin, a move likely to ruffle feathers among supporters.
The striker has been instrumental for the Welsh club since signing in July 2021, bagging a whopping 108 goals across competitions and powering them through successive promotions. But this season’s League One campaign has seen Mullin’s magic wane post-back surgery, with only one goal in eleven outings and another pair in the EFL Trophy.
Carlton Palmer, the ex-England star turned pundit, has sparked debate by suggesting Parkinson hunt for a fresh frontman in the January market to sustain Wrexham’s bid for another step up, as they hold third place in the standings. According to Football League World, Palmer said: “He’s been prolific, as we’ve seen before… but he’s untested at League One level.
“I think they’ll probably have to look past Paul Mullin with all due respect. Looking at his history, he’s not prolific in League One. If they want someone who is prolific they would have to go out and get somebody who scores goals in League One and I think they will in January.
“It’s very, very tight in those play-off spots. They will need somebody who can score goals, but given two successive promotions, they’re going along great at the moment. It is a worry that Paul Mullin does not score goals at League One level.”
