Serena Williams Admits Struggles With Her Diet as She Hilariously Shares a Harsh Reality Check

An epitome of strength, tennis GOAT, and cultural icon- words can’t entirely describe how influential Serena Williams still is in the world of sports and entrepreneurship after her retirement in August 2022. The 43-year-old has inspired many, specifically on the court when she overcomes insurmountable odds to win a staggering 23 career Grand Slams. Nevertheless, the oddsmaker has been experiencing some challenges since retiring – challenges that even a personality as strong as Serena’s struggles with sometimes. Hint: a sweet tooth might be involved!

Following nearly three years of retirement, Serena Williams revealed a challenge relevant to health-conscious individuals: resisting the temptation of pastries during a diet. The mother of two, Serena’s 2025, started with an aim – a renewed focus on health and fitness, and her changes further involve turning ‘gluten-free’. And what’s that for? The 43-year-old retired tennis icon has newer horizons to strive for now.

Serena shared that she had set a goal of taking part in a half-marathon by the end of 2025. “I’m trying to compete – not compete, rephrase – trying to do a half-marathon. That’s my new goal. So it’s just like I have to do something competitive,” she revealed while speaking to People magazine. It does sound easy, right? Especially for an athlete who played almost 26 years of professional tennis? Well, not really, it seems. Recently, the icon posted an Instagram reel, making light of her struggles with her diet.

Yesterday, Serena Williams shared a reel video on her Instagram story from ‘Weight Loss Transformations,’ which features two characters. One character represented Serena, who is seen running away from another character which she labeled as ‘Cakes and Donuts.’ The video included the caption, “Me trying to stick to the diet,” clearly showcasing Serena’s struggle with her inner self in resisting sweets leading up to her marathon run. And such delightful temptations run amok in the Williams-Ohanian family too!

Just five months after her wedding with Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in 2017, the tennis goddess celebrated with a gold and white fairytale dessert after the bakery, Lulu Cake Boutique whipped up a replica. “Fun fact at our wedding we forgot to eat cake so out wedding cake designer @everythinglulu made us a replicate cake! We finally got to eat our wedding cake!!! Love you Lex and thanks @jzevents for always making my visions come true,” she even added about the celebration on her Instagram handle.

Fast forward to 2021, with her daughter Olympia aged 4 then, the tennis pro shared a video on her Instagram again of how to make a rainbow cake. “Rainbow cake? I thought it was ‘sprinkle cake’?” she even asked her daughter while she stirred colorful batter. Clearly, the love for cake isn’t just limited to Serena; her daughter and husband are also her partners-in-crime.

The Florida native is not the only one from her family who is obsessed with sweet treats. Just before her retirement, Serena shared a glimpse of her daughter, Olympia, who also seems to be ‘mama’s girl’, helping her to make cakes in 2021, which Serena shared in her Instagram, quoting “Olympia’s recipe for the win,”. That’s not it! The six-time US Open winner also taught her daughter how to add milk when Olympia accidentally poured a bit too much into the mix.

“Now we’re gonna fix this cake. We added way too much milk. Because it’s Olympia’s cake and Olympia doesn’t measure. We just pour,” she also added. Serena even developed a separate section on her page for her daughter, named ‘Baking with Olympia’, where Serena added her remarks about making her baguettes which include delicious gluten-free items. Even last year, the six-year-old daughter prepared a special cake for her father Alexis Ohanian, when his company, Reddit’s IPO, skyrocketed, with a growth of 48%. And of course, the father of two posted his opinion over his X handle.
