Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney back Wrexham’s ambitious January transfer plans

Wrexham are currently third in League One and are aiming to earn a third successive promotion to reach the Championship under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney
Wrexham’s January transfer strategy has been revealed as co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney aim to boost their promotion prospects.
The Red Dragons are currently third in League One, aiming for an extraordinary third consecutive climb under manager Phil Parkinson. Recent transfer gossip suggests Wrexham is eyeing a forward with Championship experience, as the team’s goal-scoring has waned lately.
Club director Shaun Harvey confirmed that the Hollywood duo will strongly support the manager in the forthcoming transfer window. Speaking at a New York event last night, the ex-Football League CEO predicted a busy period as Wrexham strives for second-tier status.
He said: “Rob and Ryan have always backed Phil’s ambition. We will be active in the January transfer market because we’re in a strong position. If we progress further from where we are now, we get promoted, which is the goal.
“It’s hard to specify what and where, as there’s still six weeks until the window opens. Then it’s about who’s available and who can genuinely strengthen us. We’ve tried to ensure that we sign players not just for this division, but also for the next one.”
Since Reynolds and McElhenney took over Wrexham in February 2021, the club’s financial power has enabled them to lure several players from higher divisions. The team’s roster features notable players like Paul Mullin, Elliot Lee, and James McClean.
According to Harvey, Wrexham previously had to offer high salaries to attract players who were hesitant to join a lower-league team. However, the club’s growing reputation has changed this dynamic.
Harvey said: “Fortunately, it’s easier now with the higher we get in the leagues, because players never really wanted to drop down. We had to pay for that privilege and we called it the non-league tax.
“Where we are now is that there are players that would come to play for Wrexham in League One that would not play for any other club in that division. That’s what we’ve been able to create so I suspect we’ll be busy.”
Harvey was speaking at an event held as part of a joint-fundraising visit involving Wrexham and the Kick4Life charity which aims to help children in the southern African country of Lesotho
Executive director Humphrey Ker also revealed at the same event that he has occasionally been consulted on player signings by Wrexham’s head coach. However, he said he did not feel qualified to do give an opinion to Parkinson.
The British actor and comedian said: “Every now and then the manager will call me up and say, ‘We might sign this player, what do you think?’ I’m always like, ‘I don’t know, he looks brilliant, he looks very good in football.’ That’s about as much input as I have.”
