Recently, in her signature style of candidness, the tennis legend opened up about the joys and realities of raising two kids.
The former American sensation recently highlighted how she is struggling as a mother and how her role is impacting her daily routine. In a video that is now gaining traction on Instagram, Williams can be seen getting ready to go out as she explains her challenges in doing even small things for herself and how this unique chapter of her life makes her feel contrasting emotions at times.
Speaking in the video, Williams said, “I am obsessed with my children. I spend all day with them, I have my schedule or my work schedule, like my whole life is like ok, being with Olympia, being with Adira.” However, she made a sarcastic remark over the cancellation of school for her kids for the day and revealed how that would impact her own schedule. “But they have canceled school here and I mean my kids can’t go to school today, well at least Olympia because…” she said taking a long pause. Continuing further, Williams added, “it’s like they be hanging around all day. And I love, believe me, I love it.” But the sarcasm was soon revealed when the tennis great started revealing her challenges.
“I couldn’t even work out eventually because I was cooking, I was doing stuff,” the star player said further. She also highlighted how her daughters would wrap around her legs on seeing her. Williams explained that while such things make her happy and even mimicked her daughter’s gesture, she shared that it takes much of her time. In the video further, Adira was seen holding Williams’ hand as the tennis great attempted to go out for work out. However, she was soon able to come out and the happiness was evident on her face. “It has been a successful morning. I made it out of the house and will go for a bike ride,” Williams concluded.
A video posted earlier by Williams on her Instagram story highlights the expectations of a mother pertaining to her dressing style. A transition from the stylish outfits of mothers with their children to a more troubled form of dressing that lacks aesthetics was seen in the video. “How you think you are gonna dress as a mom,” was the text in the string of initial pictures which was followed by “Reality” for the lesser aesthetic pictures, signifying the troubles that mothers, including Serena Williams, face while discharging their parental roles.
Remember, the legendary player welcomed her first daughter Olympia just a year after she tied the knot with her husband Alexis Ohanian in 2016. The couple was blessed with their second child Adira, in 2023, a year after the star player bid adieu to the sport. Interestingly, while Serena Williams has continued to reveal her challenges, she has never failed to highlight her love for her daughters either.
The major reason that Serena Williams shared while walking away from tennis was her aspiration to grow a family. For a player of her stature who massed marvelous success on the courts, the decision was not easy. But when quizzed about it yet again and made to choose between sports and her family in a recent interaction with Glamour magazine, she let her true sentiments out.
Speaking in the interview, Williams revealed that her daughters are important to her over anything else in her life. “That’s a good one. I think at some point you do have to choose if you want to have kids, but for me, I decided to choose being a mom,” Williams said. “I never thought I would say that. But just hanging out with my girls and spending time with them and just showing up every day is an achievement, and it’s not easy. I can’t think of anything else that I achieved that’s better or greater than that.”
The remarks of the legendary player demonstrated that despite facing challenges, her love for her daughters has not been impacted a bit. It would be interesting to see if Williams would be sharing more such hilarious videos expressing how she is managing her life as a mother.
