Coco Gauff breaks Serena Williams’ 10-year record after winning the WTA Finals

Coco Gauff demonstrated incredible resilience, rallying from a set and a break down to defeat Zheng Qinwen in the final of the WTA Finals.
After a rocky North American hard-court season, the former US Open champion found her groove, delivering some of her most powerful tennis yet.
On route to the final, she took down defending champion Iga Swiatek and later upset Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals.
In the thrilling three-hour showdown in Riyadh, Coco Gauff outlasted Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
The 20-year-old faced a daunting deficit, trailing 2-0 and 5-3 in the final set and coming within two points of defeat.
Yet, Gauff held her nerve to push the set into a tiebreak, where she seized an early 6-0 lead.
Zheng attempted to mount a last-minute comeback, but Gauff clinched the win with a forehand volley at the net after three hours and four minutes of gripping tennis.
Having got over the finish line with a roar, Gauff became the youngest player to win the WTA Finals in 20 years.
The American is the youngest winner at the end-of-season finale since Maria Sharapova, who was victorious in 2004.
She is also the first American to win the event since Serena Williams ten years ago in 2014.
Coco Gauff makes statement ahead of 2025 Australian Open
Mid-season, she made the bold choice to switch coaches, parting ways with Brad Gilbert, who had guided her to her US Open title, and bringing in the much lesser-known Matt Daly to lead her team.
Despite some dismissive views about her recent form, with her forehand and serve under intense scrutiny, Gauff has shown remarkable resilience.
In Riyadh, she conquered the two best players of 2024, this year’s Australian Open finalists Zheng and Sabalenka.
Now, with renewed confidence and a fresh team, she’ll be gearing up for a strong run in Melbourne. A second Grand Slam title could well be within reach for the 20-year-old.
